Meditations for Alzheimer’s, dementia caregivers

Seasons of Caring: Meditations for Alzheimer's & Dementia Caregivers is an interfaith volume with more than 140 original meditations from 70 religious leaders and care specialists. Cumulatively, the meditations represent 17 faith traditions.

Seasons of Caring

Each writer draws upon his or her years of experience to offer words of hope, encouragement and understanding to those who are now on this journey. They also give voice to the unique challenges confronting Alzheimer's and dementia caregivers.

Seasons of Caring includes the artwork of Lester Potts Jr., and was created while he was a client at Caring Days Adult Dementia Daycare Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The volume was recently awarded the 2015 Caregiver Friendly Award by Today's Caregiver magazine.

‘Fascinating one of a kind book’

The Rev. Dr. William Randolph, director of the Office on Aging & Older Adult Ministry at the United Methodist General Board of Discipleship, describes Seasons of Caring as “a fascinating one of a kind book.”

[The book] can be very therapeutic for readers personally connected to the disease.

The book contains “the voices of many different authors reflecting different faith traditions about life, suffering, death, and this dreaded disease,” he said. “It is organized around the seasons of the year, which is of course a metaphor for the seasons of life and this disease.”

It is a great exercise to compare the different traditions and what each adds to understanding of this disease through faith, according to Randolph. “The writers represent the many places where clergy journey with those they serve through the progression of this disease,” he said. “[The book] can be very therapeutic for readers personally connected to the disease.”

Randolph said Seasons of Care is a different form of pastoral care. He said it makes an excellent devotional book for support groups.

“The book is priceless alone for the art and is such a beautiful book it belongs on the coffee tables of every doctor's waiting room in the country," Randolph said.

Editor's note: USAgainstAlzheimer’s (USA2) is committed to ending Alzheimer's by 2020. USAgainstAlzheimer's presses for greater urgency from government, industry and the scientific community in the quest for an Alzheimer's cure. The organization accomplishes this through effective leadership, collaborative advocacy and strategic investments.

USAgainstAlzheimer's and the General Board of Church & Society (GBCS) of The United Methodist Church this month announced the launch of the Faith United Against Alzheimer's Coalition (FUAAC), a cooperative effort to mobilize all elements of the faith community in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

As founders of the coalition, USAgainstAlzheimer’s and GBCS will work with faith-based organizations to promote dignity, compassionate care and quality of life for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, provide support for families, and call on industry leaders, community stakeholders and policymakers to work urgently to find disease-modifying treatments and a cure.
